Placebo, Please? (PP) was the second effort of the Charles/Matt collaboration. This was also the last album that was recorded at NuTone Studios by Chris Dugan. The tracking and mixing for PP was completed by December, 2003, yet the album was not released until January 2005 due to Matt’s relocation to the Boston area and general procrastination with the artwork.
PP is part one in Wyld Type Hybrid’s first multi-album concept series. This album tracks a relationship that quickly degrades into turmoil and mayhem. Threads of dependency, misery, and confusion are woven together to create the fabric that supports this album. The light, poppy “Guardian Angel” takes a sudden turn with the “Lies” mini-suite and quickly devolves into a cacophony of dissonance and mayhem by the time the threads fray when “The Pit” concludes.
PP is also rich with water undertones, in stark contrast to part two in the series, The First Law of Thermodynamics. The water washes down the pill. The obvious question: Drug or placebo?
